On Monday, January 17, 2005 at the Northwestern University Medical and Law School Campus in Chicago, Illinois, The HistoryMakers and Northwestern University presented The 2005 Dr. King Day Celebration. The celebration featured an afternoon program titled, Why We Can't Wait: Views on Social Justice, and an evening program titled, Are Our Children Ready?: Mobilizing a Generation.
The afternoon program featured David E . Van Zandt, Dean, Northwestern University School of Law; Lewis Landsberg, MD, Dean, Feinberg School of Medicine; Carlos Watson, CNN contributor and host of CNN's Off Topic with Carlos Watson; Terri Johnson, Jane Addams Hull House Foundation; Larry Marshall, Center on Wrongful Convictions, Northwestern University School of Law; Ramona Rodriguez, MD, Logan Square Health Center of Cook County Bureau of Health; Chuck Smith, Goodman Theatre; and Alysia Tate, Chicago Reporter. Each panelist shared their perspectives on the current status of social justice efforts, their own work to achieve equity in society, and their reflections on the agenda for 21st century social justice movements.
The evening program featured David E. Van Zandt; Julieanna Richardson, Founder & Executive Director, The HistoryMakers; Johnnetta Cole, PhD, President, Bennett College for Women; and Carlos Watson. The program focused on a discussion between Carlos Watson and Dr. Johnnetta Cole. Watson and Dr. Cole reflected on the possibilities for the next civil rights movement and whether the children of today are prepared and motivated to lead.
