Given the 21st century’s increasing political tensions and loss of civility and how these events (police brutality, massive incarceration, and economic inequality) counter the progress made during the 20th century Civil Rights Movement, The HistoryMakers archives provide real-life counter narratives to some of the most contentious issues of today (the divisive 2016 presidential election, the birth and vilification of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, campus occupations, protests). They also provide important role models, success frameworks/pathways, inspiration and sources for racial understanding and tolerance across socio-economic, racial and ethnic lines to educate others. With an “inside look” into the past and the present, the ignorance and prejudice prevalent in today’s society can be combatted with exposure to African American excellence and its relationship to American culture and progress.
