The HistoryMakers on 60 Minutes
The achievements of historically significant Black Americans are at risk of going unpreserved, as important figures die without documenting their stories for future generations. 60 MINUTES’ Bill Whitaker explores how one organization is trying to prevent that by creating an expansive digital archive of first-person accounts of the Black experience. Creating a more inclusive record of American History
The HistoryMakers’ mission has been to educate the world about the history, lives, careers and accomplishments of African Americans across a variety of disciplines - the arts, business, civic engagement, education, entertainment, law, the media, medicine, STEM, the military, music, politics, religion, sports, and fashion & beauty - by making its content accessible worldwide and a free public website. With The HistoryMakers Digital Archive, users can access thousands of first person accounts of African American leaders from desktop, portable devices, and smart phones 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, anywhere in the world. The HistoryMakers Collection represents the only massive attempt to record the black experience since the WPA Slave Narratives of the 1930s. The Library of Congress serves as our permanent repository.
